In the Sixth Form, (Years 12 and 13), pupils can choose from up to twenty subjects. In addition to the GCSE subjects Psychology, Media Studies, Music Technology and Politics are offered. English Language/Literature has been offered for the forthcoming year. Every effort is made to arrange the option columns to suit the needs of all pupils. Class sizes are relatively small (staff student ratio 1:4 on average) allowing for a tutorial approach and a great deal of individual help. Apart from their AS subjects all year 12 students either take the Sports leadership Award or a Curriculum Enrichment programme. During non curriculum time Year 13 spend the first few weeks of the academic year completing their University applications before starting a further term of curriculum enrichment activities. For those considering applying to Oxbridge there is the option of participating in the Camford Society. This is a group that meets weekly to develop interview and application skills.
For more information on the curriculum please see the individual subject areas or come and visit the school.
Why Choose Greenacre School for Girls?
Hello, my name is Sophie Botting, I am in the Upper Sixth and I am the Head Girl. I am currently studying A levels in PE, Geography and Economics & Business Studies. I still participate in a wide variety of sport, including the Senior netball team, and am involved in many other things.
Hello, my name is Annabel Leach and I am the Deputy Head Girl and I am currently studying Mathematics, Geography and Economics & Business Studies.
The Greenacre Sixth Form has given us many opportunities and advantages. We had a completely free choice of A level subject combination. We were able to choose from twenty different subjects options. Most of us took four AS subjects in the Lower Sixth and are now specialising in three in the Upper Sixth. We have received a lot of guidance and support in making our UCAS applications and preparing our personal statements and we are all thrilled to have received very good offers of places from our chosen universities. There is also a weekly enrichment session of debate, presentation and discussion called the Camford Society which gives additional support in preparing for university.
The Sixth Form is large enough to provide a lot of opportunities but small enough that we are each very well known by our teachers and are taught in tutorial style groups. The teachers know us really well and give us an awful lot of individual support and encouragement. Our lessons are lively and interactive and have helped foster a real passion for our chosen subjects.
Girls in the Sixth Form are encouraged to experience a broad range of skills and activities and are given many opportunities to develop confidence. In the Lower Sixth we follow either the Community Sports Leadership Award and/or the Arts Award Scheme. In the Upper Sixth we have a varied enrichment programme that includes first aid training, safe driving awareness, cookery and finance for university. We have a games afternoon each week with a wide variety of activities on offer including badminton, dance, netball, swimming and many more. All members of the Sixth Form take on a Prefect role and work with the teaching staff to lead and support younger pupils from Nursery upwards. We also take part in many of the clubs and activities on offer to all pupils in the school including orchestra, choir, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, MUN debating and help with activities such as Maths Clinic and Art Clubs. We also lead the school in weekly assemblies, fundraising activities and links with the local community including regular visits to local residential homes. All girls in the Sixth Form have the opportunity to participate in a range of school trips including the annual ski trip and the biannual Sixth Form trip to America and this year there is also a netball and hockey tour to Malta.
Last summer, girls in the Upper Sixth achieved 74% A*-B grades at A level and 91% gained places at their first choice universities. We are hoping to match this this summer! Whether we do or not we certainly feel that our years at Greenacre have helped us to develop as individuals, each achieving our very best and finding our strengths and interests. Most of all, since joining the school at the ages of six and eight respectively, we have grown immensely in confidence and feel ready and well prepared for the next step.
