Science

Science is a popular subject at all levels. We enjoy superb facilities, which were purpose built in 1999. Our examination results are excellent and reflect the pupils’ enjoyment of Science.

All four labs are spacious and excellently equipped to teach all students. All girls enjoy hands on Science in every year, as we teach through extensive practical work.

Full use is made of the interactive whiteboards in all labs and the students have access to PCs in lessons.

The Science Curriculum

In Year 7 a Combined Science course is studied, which incorporates the appropriate levels of the National Curriculum. Each week, the girls spend three lessons in the laboratories developing their experimental skills while studying a range of Biology, Chemistry and Physics topics.

From Year Eight onwards, the girls study the separate Sciences, each taught by a specialist teacher. Emphasis is put on the girls learning theoretical concepts through individual and group practicals.

In Years Eight and Nine the girls are taught in sets. Set 3 usually has between six and ten pupils to allow plenty of individual attention from staff. Set 1 usually has around 20 pupils and there are between 15 and 18 pupils in set 2. All girls follow the same schemes of work.

For Years 10 and 11, all girls must choose between taking:

  • the three Sciences as separate GCSEs
  • two GCSE Sciences: Science A and Additional Science

The AQA modular specifications are offered for each of these awards.

In the Sixth form AS and A levels are offered in all three Sciences: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Our small class sizes, which range from one to seven students, allow staff to provide plenty support and individual attention. This ensures that all girls achieve their full potential.

In all courses, practical and theoretical work are interwoven and students carry out a wide range experiments for themselves, instead of relying on demonstrations or videos.

Past students have chosen to study a wide range of subjects at university, including medicine, pharmacy and engineering.
